Facility Nurses Abuse 84-year-old Alzheimer’s Patient
There are nursing home abuse cases that are difficult to read about because of the severity and cruelty of nurses and other staff. In a reprint of a McClatchy-Tribune Regional News story, the story of an 84-year-old woman who suffers from Alzheimer’s was revealed. Staying in a Richmond nursing home, Armeda Thomas sustained dozens of unexplained bruises on her body when the family visited.
Her relatives were not satisfied with the explanation given for the injuries and placed a hidden camera to confirm their suspicions. According to Thomas’s granddaughter, “we were just so desperate to know the truth and for other people to know the truth…you want to be able to go to sleep at night knowing that your loved one is well cared for and not scared.”
Upon seeing the videos, here are some of the instances of abuse uncovered:
- Pulling Ms. Thomas out of the bed by her neck and wrists
- Rough handling when moving the victim from one side to another
- Nursing staff dancing and taunting in front of Ms. Thomas
- Nurses eating Ms. Thomas’s food despite the log that says the resident ate the meal herself
- Failure to clean and feed Ms. Thomas
- One incident wherein the victim laid on the floor for over an hour unattended
One glance at Ms. Thomas’s records also provides clues about how badly she has been treated. X-rays reveal that she has lumbar vertebrae fractures. In addition, she also lost 19 pounds in just two weeks – most likely because the nurses eat her food and fails to take care of her. The district ombudsman of the Nursing Home Ombudsman Agency of the Bluegrass speaks on behalf of the industry, “no nursing home sets out to want these things to happen but it’s a fallout when you don’t have good training, adequate supervision, and when you don’t have a culture that encourages the staff to speak up.”
